TARTAN TUESDAY! Today's tartan highlight is Clan C TARTAN TUESDAY! Today's tartan highlight is Clan Cumming!
Motto: Courage
-
The traditional clan lands are in Badenoch (central Scotland), with the historic seat being both Inverlochy Castle and Lochindorb Castle. The clan seat is now at Altyre.
The founder of the Cummings is Richard Comyn who is said to have lived between 1115-1179 He married Hextilda, King Donald III's only granddaughter in 1145.
-
John Comyn, known as "the Black Comyn," was a contender for the Crown of Scotland after Queen Margaret’s death in 1290. Although his brother-in-law, John Balliol, was also a claimant, the Black Comyn chose not to push his own claim to maintain their relationship. He became a strong supporter of King John Balliol and a key figure against English King Edward I. His son, "The Red Comyn," became a powerful leader and defeated the English at the Battle of Roslin in 1303, despite being outnumbered. After King John's abdication, The Red Comyn was appointed as a Guardian of Scotland. In 1306, he was murdered by Robert the Bruce, who would become king a month later. This assassination sparked a short but bloody civil war. The Red Comyn's lands were forfeited to the crown and given to Clan Macpherson for their support of Robert the Bruce. Clan Comyn was renamed Clan Cumming, with the Altyre branch taking over the chiefship.Throughout the 15th and 16th centuries, Clan Cumming was involved in violent feuds with Clans Macpherson, Show, Brodie, and Mackintosh. In 1424, the Cummings seized lands from Clan Mackintosh, resulting in a retaliatory massacre. In 1550, Clan Brodie was denounced as rebels for attacking Clan Cumming, and in 1594, they fought alongside Clans Gordon and Cameron against Clan Campbell, Mackintosh, Murray, and Forbes at the Battle of Glenlivet.
An interesting note: Clan Cumming was also known for its talented musicians, serving as pipers and fiddlers for Clan Grant throughout the late 1500s and most of the 1600s.
-
The current Chief is Sir Alexander "Alastair" Penrose Gordon-Cumming of Altyre (b. 1954), who took over for his father Sir William in 2002.
