Clan Wilson is associated with being a sept of both Clan Gunn and Clann Innes, whose lands are in Caithness (Northeast Scotland), and Moray (South of Caithness) respectively.

James Wilson (1742-1798) was born in Ceres, Fife, and later emigrated to America, becoming a signatory of the Declaration of Independence. Alexander Wilson (1766-1813), a Paisley-born weaver, fled to America after his satirical poetry caused legal trouble. He became a renowned ornithologist and was a maternal ancestor of President Ronald Reagan. Andrew Wilson (1780-1845) studied under Alexander Nasmyth and led the Trustees' Academy in Edinburgh. John Wilson (1785-1854), known as Christopher North, was a professor of Moral Philosophy at Edinburgh University. Robert Wilson (1800-82) contributed to the invention of the screw propeller. Missionary John Wilson (1804-75) founded the Oriental Christian Spectator and an English school in Bombay. Sir Daniel Wilson (1816-92) became a professor at Toronto University. Hugh Wilson (1833-77) edited and launched major newspapers, including the Edinburgh Evening News. Charles Thomson Rees Wilson (1869-1959) won a Nobel Prize in 1927 for inventing the Cloud Chamber. Brian Wilson (1948- ), born in Dunoon, served as Minister for Energy in the Blair Government.

The tartan colours are green, red, navy blue and white. This tartan was created in 1780 by a weaver named William Wilson as a wedding gift for his son. 
The current Chief is either the Chief of Clan Gunn (John Gunn), or the Chief of Clan Innes (does not have an official Chief).
